Rare Engraved Presentation Henry Second Model Lever Action Rifle to Henry E. Darby From his Friends, Cincinnati, Ohio, May 6, 1867. Serial no. 11542, .44 caliber, 24-inch barrel with brass front sight and ladder type rear sight. Integral spring-loaded tubular magazine. Barrel serialized on top flat at breech. Lightly scroll-engraved brass frame, the left side with pictorial panel depicting an American eagle with riband in beak reading: E. Pluribus Unum and surrounded by a scroll-engraved border and flanking scroll motifs. Right side of frame with reprise of scroll-engraved border containing presentation inscription reading: Henry E. Darby/From his Friends/Cincinnati Ohio, May 6, 1867. Lower tang marked: W. Steel hammer and lever. Varnished walnut buttstock with brass buttplate numbered on inside to gun. Unmarked blued stock screws. Sling ring on left side of barrel and sling mount on left side of buttstock. Darby served with with this unit during his second enlistment and was discharged on June 16, 1865. His first enlistment was with the 134th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, early in the war. He then went to Salisbury, N.C. and then to Georgia where he received a 30 day furlough. He was then listed as a deserter. He later showed up with Company G, 181st Ohio Infantry. While attending the Company G reunion he was presented with this fine Henry rifle. Sold together with a copy of a notarized letter from one time owner, Thurston Van Horn, attesting to history of rifle and copies of select records belonging to Henry Darby. Darby died October 4, 1900. Condition: Very good. Barrel showing a mottled grey age patina with scattered light marks and pitting present. Brass elements with mellow age patina.
