    Description

Model 1881 Marlin 45/70 Caliber Rifle Shipped to Famed Denver Gun Sellers J. P. Lower, with their Name Stamped on the Top of the Barrel. According to Flayderman, Marlin made over 12,000 versions with the 28" barrel, but only 780 like this one with the 30" barrel. The Marlin factory letter states that it was shipped on April 16, 1884. Rather oddly, the magazine is approximately 2" shorter than the barrel, and there is a second dovetail on the underside of the barrel approximately 0.5" behind the one used to attach the magazine. However, the patina is consistent and there is no obvious indication of later alteration. Overall the gun is in very nice condition, with approximately 70% of the original finish, the rest being a pleasing gray. Action is crisp and tight, bore excellent. The wood has been re-varnished over a couple old surface dings. Overall length 47.5".

One of the best-known gunsmiths in the West, John Prey Lower bought the Denver gun shop of the Freund brothers in 1875 and launched his famous business. He was known for stamping his name on the guns he sold, a practice he had developed in earlier, more modest gun-selling ventures. In addition to being an important gun merchant, he was considered one of the best shots in Denver, and maintained a private shooting range behind his store. Like many a Western entrepreneur Lower died penniless and in debt in 1917, but he left a rich tradition of bringing fine weapons to the West.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
