    Manufactured Janurary 1865.

    Hoggson Engraved Henry Lever Action Rifle.
    Serial no. 7621[barrel and buttplate], left side of upper tang marked with an E, left side of lower tang marked: G / 7621, .44 rimfire caliber, 24 1/4-inch barrel with standard blade front and adjustable rear sight calibrated to 800 yards. Receiver is scroll-engraved by Samuel Hoggson. Left side with pointing hound motif. The right side of the receiver is engraved with a large panel of intertwined foliate scrollwork on fine pearled background with double borders. Just forward of this panel are large blossoms also with double borders. Top of receiver and buttplate tang are engraved to match. This style of engraving along with the hound and flower embellishments are the identifying characteristics of engraving by Hoggson. Highly figured stock. Tip of lower tang with Oliver Winchester's W.

    See page 24 and 25 of Wilson's "The Book of Winchester Engraving" for identical examples. One of those is serial no. 7625.

    Condition: Good to very good to fine. Traces of blue remain in channels. The balance a smooth, thin gray-brown patina. Professional period repair to both sides of wrist. Bright bore showing scattered patches of fine to moderate pitting.
