Historic Tombstone Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle, Serial No. 8557,
.45-70 caliber, 24 1/4-inch octagonal barrel with fixed front sight and rear ladder sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Dust cover with cross hatched thumbprint oval. Smooth walnut straight stock and fore-end. Right side of stock stamped: T M&M CO, for Tombstone Mill & Mining Co. Crescent metal buttplate with cleaning rod reservoir. Manufactured in 1879.
One of the most significant operators in the territory, it was founded by Albert and Ed Schieffelin, who were prominent figures in early Tombstone history. The Schlieffelins were well acquainted with the Earps and belonged to many of the same organizations. The rifle was the subject of a 1980 Arms Gazette article by John A. Kopec in which he relates the provenance and opines that it was most likely in Tombstone at the time of the OK Corral shout out and the U.S. Cavalry's wars with Geronimo and Cochise. It is also pictured in Firearms of the American West, 1866-1894 by Garavaglia and Worman. Included is a letter from the Winchester Museum stating that it was shipped on August 29, 1879, as well as a detailed letter from Witherell's, from whom the late owner purchased it in the 1990s.

Usual minor dings and abrasions from use on the stock. The gun is accompanied by an extensive file of documentation and surely ranks as one of the best documented pre-gun fight Tombstone weapons surviving.
Condition: Very good. Retaining 15-20% finish, mainly in protected areas. The balance a smooth grey patina with scattered signs of handling wear and patches of pitting. Noticeable scuffs, dings and bruising present to wood. Cleaning rod absent. Action good. Strong bore.
