    Engraved Henry Lever Action Rifle Possibly by Lockwood Sanford. Serial no. 3355, .44 caliber, 24 1/4-inch octagonal barrel with brass blade front and ladder rear sights. There is no dovetail in the receiver which is consistent with army production contract guns beginning with serial no. 3000. Barrel with inspector marks: CGC/H and TW1. . Brass receiver engraved with federal shield and floral motifs on left side. Right side with vacant riband over figure-eight pattern and figure of moth. HH marks visible on right front of receiver. Straight grained stock with partially engraved brass buttplate with cleaning rod reservoir. Four tack holes at comb. 12 tack holes on bottom of stock. Note: CGC is Charles G. Chapman, ordnance sub-inspector under Col. William A. Thornton Chief Inspector of Contract Arms. Thornton and Oliver Winchester oversaw inspection of this serial no. range 3000-4000. Of these, 784 were shipped in March 1864 to 1st D.C. Cavalry. CGC cartouches are also found on rifles in this range. Condition: Good to very good. Metal a smooth gray patina with traces of blue in protected areas. Scattered patches of fine pitting. Lever is a handmade gunsmith replacement. Brass has been mechanically cleaned. and showing a mellow age patina. Magazine spring rod is loose. Upper tang slightly ill-fitting and showing signs of having been cleaned. Small staining to buttplate. Stock very good as revarnished. Dents and small gouges. Good bore with moderate pitting.
