    Description

Johnny Baker's Own Model 1873 Winchester, Delivered Directly to Him c/o Buffalo Bill's Wild West. Many guns are known with attributions to famous Wild West show performers, but few have the ironclad documentation of this gun. A 1991 letter from the Cody Firearms Museum (where the original records are housed) confirms that this rifle, serial number 63353B, was shipped to "John Baker, Bangor, Me., c/o Buffalo Bill Wild West. Charged to Buffalo Bill Wild West. " A 1971 official postcard from the curator of the Winchester Gun Museum in New Haven also confirms the information.

This is a .44 caliber rifle octagonal barrel. Inasmuch as Baker was a show performer, it seems reasonable to presume this gun was used in Buffalo Bill shows. Condition of the rifle and bore are excellent. The gun has a pleasing patina and retains over 70% of the original blue. The varnish appears original, and the wood is nice, with the usual minor surface marks. Inexplicably, the initials "JF" have been carved into the stock, perhaps a subsequent owner. However, the records leave no doubt as to the original ownership! In accordance with our Federal Firearms License, you must complete the necessary requirements to receive this lot. Please see the page on FFL requirements in our Terms and Conditions.
