    J. Henry & Sons Half-Stock Percussion Plains Rifle.

    Unserialized, .38 caliber, 36-inch octagonal barrel with fixed front and rear sights. Stock stamped US behind triggerguard. Top of barrel marked: HENRY. Scroll engraved lock marked: P.S.J. & CO / WARRANTED [P.S. Justice & Co]. Smooth hardwood straight stock with brass furniture and hinged patchbox. Wood ramrod.
    Note: Guns of this model in small calibers (.38 to 45) were used as treaty payments from Peace Commissioners in 1868. It is assumed that the small bores we to justify their distribution as hunting rifles rather than weapons of war, see The Plains Rifle by Hanson, pages 75 and 113.

    Condition: Very good. Finish primarily a smooth grey patina with scattered signs of handling wear and pitting. Noticeable dings, scuffs and bruises present to wood. Action functions. Moderately pitted bore.
