    Description

Henry Rifle: An Important Engraved Tacked Example, Serial # 5419. Featured on the front cover of R. Stephen Dorsey's book Guns of the Western Indian War (Eugene, Oregon: Collector's Library, 1995). Dorsey declares this gun "one of the finest Indian Henrys." Although the gun is unsigned, he attributes the clearly-period engraving to Nimschke. Certainly it is in the distinctive Nimschke style (page 136).

The fifteen-shot rimfire .44 caliber Henry was a major advance in the development of American firearms, and appearing in 1862, Henrys saw action in the Civil War as well as the West, paving the way for the hugely successful Winchester lever-actions.

The present example shows ample evidence of use and exposure but retains a pleasing appearance. The barrel and magazine tube show scattered light pitting and slight evidence of old surface rust, but exhibits an even brown color. Bore is fair, action operates smoothly. Upper and lower tangs slightly bent. The butt stock shows shrinkage from extended dryness, with one repaired wood chip. Seven notches have been carved into the underside. The brass tacks are nicely patinated and show an excellent accumulation of old deposits around each one. The pins of the tacks have the proper square shape for nineteenth century vintage.

All in all, a highly desirable example of one of the West's truly legendary guns.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
