Cased Fine Rare U.S. Springfield 1875 Third Type Officers' Model Trapdoor Breechloading Rifle
No serial number as standard with this model. .45-70 caliber. 26-inch tapered round barrel fitted with Beach folding front sight and 1879 rear sight. Gold-plated. VP and eaglehead proofs. Blued receiver is fitted with case-hardened breechblock marked U S Model 1878. Case-hardened lock is marked: US Springfield with eagle. Case-hardened triggerguard assembly with knurled late style trigger. Removable pistol grip. Oil-finished American walnut stock is mounted to barrel with single blued band with silver-plated pewter leaf pattern fore-end tip. Stock is checkered at grip and fore-end. Folding tang peep sight. Stock is stamped with inspector's mark SWP 1885 [Samuel W. Porter] and with circled P at rear of checkering. Buttplate is stamped U. S . Metal parts are engraved with open scroll design, as done by Springfield factory employee F. W. Martin. One of 100 rifles produced in 1885. These rifles were all private purchase weapons. Less than 500 of this model were produced with this third type being the most rare. The rare third model is identified by the square profile to the fore-end cap, the brass ramrod tip and the SWP 1885 inspector markings on the stock. Condition: Fine. Barrel retains 60 - 70% original blue with light surface pitting from poor storage and some minor scratches. Receiver retains approximately 80-85% of its original nitre blue. Barrel band a gray patina with surface pitting. Fore-end tip has darkened where finish has flaked. Breechblock, lock, and hammer with just slightly faded case colors. Stock retains nearly all of its original finish with numerous minor scratches and dents. Inspector stamps are sharp. Checkering remains crisp with slight softening. Small dents observed at bottom of wrist and right side of forearm. Buttplate has been painted silver. Bore is very strong with some light pitting. Lock is crisp. A fine example of this rare Springfield.
