    Description

Annie Oakley: Another Significant Marlin .22 Caliber Rifle, Serial # 1428, Owned and Used by Annie. Annie Oakley made two of her most memorable public shooting demonstrations in 1922. In July she was the star attraction at a Long Island fund-raiser organized by Fred Stone, a sort of Wild West review. Her performance was filmed. Surviving footage shows her skipping into the arena and, with .22, breaking target after target thrown or twirled by Frank Butler. That fall in Boston she gave five paid demonstrations of sharp-shooting before a combined one-day crowd estimated at 100,000 spectators. A Marlin Model 39 .22 caliber rifle was among her firearms, very likely this one. The successor to the highly successful Model 1891, Marlin's Model 39 was introduced in 1922 with a stronger bolt and receiver that allowed for the use of newer high-powered .22 ammunition (indicated by serial number prefix "HS"). The deluxe checkering on the light walnut forestock and butt, the beautiful and still intact case-hardening, the special dimensions, and the low serial number suggest that this was probably a presentation from the Marlin Company, one of the few firearms companies to which she ever lent a paid endorsement. This significant rifle is in excellent condition. In accordance with our Federal Firearms License, you must complete the necessary requirements to receive this lot. Please see the page on FFL requirements in our Terms and Conditions. This Annie Oakley gun will be accompanied by a letter of authentication from Paul Fees. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
