    Description

MESOPOTAMIA. Proto-literate period, circa 3500-2750 BC. Early seal stone. An ovoid white marble cachet with flattened ends, 1.1 inches (2.7 cm) in length, piercing from both ends. On the face of the seal, drill points in random pattern. Per types produced discovered at excavations in Yorgan Tepe and Nuzi. Cf. Fredericq Les Cachets Mesopotamiens Protohistoriques (D. Homes) plates xxxviii, 413-414 for type. Offered together with a red carnelian stamp seal of Sasanid Persia, circa 4th-6th centuries CE, of pierced ovoid form, with a branch or tree engraved on the flattened stamping surface. (Two items in lot).

From The Living Torah Museum Collection; acquired from Time Machine Company (David Liebert).

In early Mesopotamia, to create contracts between people, crude river stones were shaped and smoothed, drilled and decorated so that owners could establish early contracts and lock items in storage. Seal stones remained a popular means of identifying personal communications and transactions for multiple millennia, as testified by the Sasanid Persian seal from the also offered in this lot.
