    10-Spouted Lamp

JUDAEA-SAMARIA. Late Roman to Byzantine era, circa 400-500 CE. Ceramic multi-spouted oil lamp. "Shovel" type, of triangular form, with a straight handle, central filling hole, and ten spouts along beveled long edge. Decorated with geometric patterns, straight lines, and a central spoked double circle with dotted inner band. Red terracotta with partial light earthen slip, the nozzles lightly scorched, otherwise intact. Cf. Haneroth Halalou, the Josef Chaim Kaufman Collection of Oil Lamps, p. 229-230, 816-817 (similar lamps with 11 nozzles).

From the Hadji Baba Museum Collection, Old City Jerusalem; IAA export approval #530994.

This attractive multi-spout lamp is very similar to the "Samaritan type" lamp of the 5th century CE with nine holes, identified as a Hanukkah lamp, sold by Christie's on June 8, 2004 (lot 77, realized $26,290). Though this one has ten spouts, the general form and decoration are quite similar, indicating production by the same or associated workshop in Byzantine Judaea-Samaria. It should be noted that the "Samaritan" type designation refers to region and workshop and does not suggest these lamps were actually employed by Samaritans, who do not celebrate Hanukkah.

‡ The owner placed a late bid on this unreserved lot and repurchased it, subject to applicable commission.
