    Unique Multi-Spout Lamp

JUDAEA. Middle-Late Roman era, circa 200-300 CE. Multi-nozzle terracotta oil lamp. Proto-Beit Natif type, 5.5 X 7 inches (14 X 18 cm), with square body, looped handle, central filling hole, and ten spouts along arrayed along the beveled straight edge. Decorated with two long palm branches, trident heads, vine scrolls and other geometric motifs. Light earthen slip glaze, with some terracotta showing through. Minor hole and one light crack across one nozzle, otherwise intact and unrestored. An extremely rare type! Cf. Haneroth Halalou, the Josef Chaim Kaufman Collection of Oil Lamps, p. 214-215, 765-768 for roughly similar lamps of "shovel" form.

From the Hadji Baba Museum Collection, Old City Jerusalem; IAA export approval #530994.

This unusual lamp is of a type and shape closely akin to the previous nine-spouted "menorah" lamp, and also represents a form between the "Southern" and "Beit-Natif" oil lamp types.
