    Description

    Classic Shipwreck Amphora

ISRAELITE. Iron Age II B-C, circa 925-586 BCE. Large storage amphora. Standing 22" tall, with a broad mouth and tapered lip, the conical top widens to a pronounced shoulder and the body tapers into a teardrop-shaped terminus; two small rounded handles extend from the shoulders. Pronounced ridges from wheel-thrown manufacture. Intact, with extensive marine encrustation indicating sea salvage. Cf. Amiran, R. Ancient Pottery of the Holy Land, Pl. 81, 8. With custom Lucite stand.

From The Living Torah Museum Collection; ex Donald F. Brown Collection, acquired via private donation.

The amphora evolved in the Bronze Age as a means to transport liquids, primarily wine, by ship. The pointed bottom made them easy to store in a ship's hold partially filled with sand (later, special racks were also employed).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
