CANAANITE. Middle Bronze Age, circa 1730-1550 BC. Terracotta dipper juglet. Approximately 3.75 inches (9.6 cm) tall, with bell-shaped footed dipper section and flaring mouth topped by and suspension arch. This would have been attached to a cord and used to dip water from a larger vessel, or a well. Intact, with areas of earthen encrustation. Published in Lachish III: The Iron Age (Olga Tuffnell, Oxford University, 1953), plate 88, 283.

From The Living Torah Museum Collection; ex Dr. Donald F. Brown Collection, acquired by donation; originally excavated at Lachish, ca. 1933-1935.

It is interesting to note how many "by the well" scenes are incorporated into the Old and New Testaments, testimonial to the importance of water supply in a desert-oriented culture. A vessel like this might have been used by Zipporah during her first encounter with Moses in Exodus 2:16-18, or by the Samaritan "woman at the well" in John 4:4-26.
