    Description

    CANAANITE. Early Bronze Age, circa 3000-2300 BC. Terracotta Water Jar. This large vessel of classic shape stands 9.5 inches (24 cm) tall, with bulbous body overall width of 8.5 inches (21 cm), cylindrical neck and flaring mouth, with two small carrying handles and a resting space for a small dipper jug. The body is decorated with a cross-hatch pattern in applied red paint, mimicking basketry. For similar examples, see R. Amiran, Ancient Pottery of the Holy Land, pages 42-51 and plate 11, 23-25. Intact, with no apparent restorations.

    From The Living Torah Museum Collection; ex Dr. Donald F. Brown Collection, acquired by donation; originally excavated at Lachish, ca. 1933-1935.
