    Description

    J. ALLEN ST JOHN (American, 1872-1957)
The Cave Girl, book cover, 1925
    Oil on board
    35 x 26 in.
    Signed lower left

This St. John masterpiece is the dust jacket art for the hardcover first edition of The Cave Girl by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Grosset & Dunlap, NY, 1925. All connoisseurs of adventure and fantasy know the work of J. Allen St. John. Considered the ultimate Tarzan artist due to his breathtaking series of covers and interior illustrations for the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs, most major oils painted by St. John are owned by private institutions or locked away in private collections of the highest quality. In fact, a major St. John oil has not been up for auction in many years, making this a rare find indeed. Exhibiting all the qualities that made St. John world-famous, the composition is wonderfully colorful and dynamic and features that incredible sense of anatomy that characterizes St. John's best works. The brushwork is lush and loose and rich, indicating a very painterly approach; he does not want to deaden the piece with tightness. Like the example presented here, St. John's best oils carry the viewer away on flights of the imagination. A rare opportunity to acquire a masterwork from one of the field's most enduring names. From the Jerry Weist Collection.

    More Information:

The top one-third of this painting was damaged in the 1950s warehouse fire at Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. This top third section was subsequently expertly repainted/added by a professional conservator. Two linear creases in the upper background area are running thru standing figure's elbow.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
