    Smith & Wesson 2nd Model American No. 3 Single Action Revolver Factory Cut for Shoulder Stock. Serial no. 2??? [butt]; 385 [back of barrel latch cavity]; 355 [back of cylinder]; 23405 [stamped on inside of right grip], .44 American caliber, 8-inch ribbed barrel with address reading: SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT. JULY 10 60. JAN. 17. FEB. 17. JULY 11 65. & AUG. 24. 69. Blued finish. Case-hardened hammer and triggerguard. Oil-finished walnut grips, the right grip stamped on inside: 23405. Top of gripstrap and butt cut for shoulder stock. Condition: Fine to excellent as configured.: Retaining approximately 70-75% finish, mixed with grey-brown patina and showing wear on grip assembly. Hammer retaining case-hardening with some vibrant color remaining. Triggerguard with faded case-hardening. Light tracking line on cylinder. Grips with light wear. Incorrect domed replacement screw in butt [originals fitted with flat screw to accommodate shoulder stock bracket.. According to the book, Smith & Wesson American Model by Charles W. Pate, page 303, "One can readily tell if a revolver left the factory originally as a stocked pistol because otherwise the serial number would be at least partially obliterated" as in this example, making it an example returned to factory to be cut for a shoulder stock. Smith & Wesson historian Roy Jinks has stated that about 604 shoulder stocks were manufactured by Smith & Wesson, the last being shipped August 28, 1874.
