    Rare Colt Type 2 "Send Back" Model 1862 Police Conversion Breech Loading Revolver. Serial no. 8743 [barrel, frame, guard, arbor, cylinder and butt], .38 rim fire caliber, 4 ½-inch barrel with Hartford address. Gold- washed ejector rod housing, cylinder and hammer. Silver-plated barrel, frame with original ivory stocks which are numbered to the gun in period ink. Extensively engraved, in the American scroll style with punch dot background on barrel, frame and hammer. Fan motif to top of backstrap in-the-style-of Nimschke. Bulls eye ejector tip. Stagecoach hold up scene on cylinder. Two-line, two-date patent marks. Blued trigger. External loading gate spring with assembly number 3500. Type 2 is from Breslin,Pirie and Price "Variations of New Model Police and Pocket Breech Loading Pistols". According to the authors this "send back" example was originally a Model 1862 Police Percussion revolver that was sent back to the factory for cartridge conversion. "Send Backs" are rare. This is one of five or six known. It was likely engraved at that time but not necessarily at the Colt factory. Condition: Fine. Retaining approximately 70-80% original finishes with some fading of gold wash along ejector rod housing and front edge of cylinder. Very strong cylinder scene. High point edge wear of silver plate to gripstrap. Grips an excellent fit and showing age wear and mellow patina consistent with an approximate 1871 production date. Bore bright with two small patches of pitting. Action crisp. A remarkable example.
