Fine and Rare Civil War Confederate Spiller & Burr Revolver.

Serial no. 534 [barrel, lever, butt, frame under grips and inside right grip panel], .36 caliber, 6-inch octagonal barrel with fixed front sight and frame notch rear sight. Blued finish. Case-hardened hammer. Brass frame with C.S. stamped to right side. Six-shot cylinder with six stop slots and twist design. Two-piece walnut grip panels. The letter M stamped to left side of frame under grip panel. Flayderman's states c.1862-1864 in Atlanta, Georgia with later production at the Macon Armory, Macon, Georgia c. 1864-1865. Revolver of the Whitney Navy Type. Approximately 1,450 manufactured between 1862-1864. This serial number is not listed in Albaugh/Benet/Simmons, Confederate Handguns (1963).
Note: "The History of Spiller & Burr revolvers began with an optimistic government contract calling for a total of 15,000 pieces. The Company first set up shop in Richmond, Virginia, and moved in 1862 to Atlanta, Georgia, where 762 revolvers have been estimated manufactured. After purchase of the firm by the C.S. government in January, 1864, production commenced again at the Macon Armory where an estimated 689 revolvers were made. Differences between the two types are minor, with the main detail being the apparent greater angle between the frame and the grip" as told in Flayderman's [10-019].

Condition: Very good to fine for this type of Confederate handgun. The pistol is fine with most of the brass frame, a fine aged golden yellow patina which appears to have been cleaned at some point. Barrel with strong traces of blue. Normal scuffs and dings present to wood. Left grip replaced. Cylinder pin, mainspring, turn key, loading lever catch replaced. Action crisp. Lightly pitted bore.
