Engraved Colt's Third Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver.

Serial no. 12384, .44 caliber, 7 ½-inch barrel. Beautiful period bank note scroll engraving in "donut" style on frame, rammer, trigger guard and hammer. Silver-plated grip strap and guard. Figured one-piece walnut grips. All matching numbers including the wedge [384]. The serial number markings on the frame, guard and butt each have a dot under them indicating factory-planned special treatment for this gun. The fine bank note-style "donut" engraving is further enhanced by game scenes in ovals on the barrel lug flats. This unique addition is mentioned by serial number in Wilson's "The Book of Colt Engraving" on page 29. This master engraving work extends throughout the frame and to the recoil shield. The top of the hammer has received a fish-scale type cross hatching. The edges of the trigger guard at the frame show a very fine border decoration of alternating fine lines. Rammer screw, frame and trigger guard screws with sunburst designs. Both the cylinder and the triggerguard are marked F105, an apparent inventory number from period of use. Inspector's initials T and C on triggerguard.

Condition: Good for this model. The metal is a primarily gray patina. There are signs of the gun having been cleaned at the muzzle, the right side of the barrel, the rammer, both sides of frame and on the cylinder as these areas are showing scattered patches of moderate pitting. Generous traces of silver plate remain on the trigger guard, butt and backstrap. Wedge and hammer screws somewhat marred. Grips: Fine. Very smooth with only light age wear and retaining traces of original varnish. The bore is very strong with some light pitting. Action crisp and tight.
