    Colt Model 1862 Police Conversion Single Action Revolver. Serial no. 1880 [barrel, frame,triggerguard and butt], .38 rimfire caliber, 5 1/2-inch round barrel with brass bead front sight and single-line New York address. Blued and case-hardened finish. Fluted 5-shot cylinder. Left side of frame marked Colt's Patent and 36CAL. Brass gripstrap and triggerguard. Varnished walnut grips. Condition: Good as configured. Loading gate absent. Retaining approximately 15-20% blue finish primarily in protected areas the balance a smooth gray patina. Numerous dents and tool marks to barrel, lug and cylinder. Ejector rod tip is bent. Marred screws. Traces of case colors. Mellow patina to brass. Grips very good with scratches and wear. Cylinder does not lock up at half-cock. Action needs adjustment .Note: According to Breslin, Pirie and Price in "Variations Of Colt's New Model Police & Pocket Breech Loading Pistols," the Type 1 revolvers in this serial number range were not conversions. They left the factory as newly made (from Police parts) breech-loading cartridge revolvers. c1872-1881.
