    Description

Colt .38/40 Pearl-handled Revolver Belonging to Texas Ranger David Odem (1857-1925). ** Gun Control Act Requirements Apply**
Odem had his name and "Sinton, Texas" beautifully engraved onto the left grip (a surface flake has affected part of the town name). Odem served a number of terms as Patricio County Sheriff from 1882 to 1886 and from 1896 to 1914. In the early 1890s he became a partner in the Sinton Town Company, which laid out the town of Sinton, where he operated a general store and co-founded a newspaper, the Patricio County News. The town of Odem in the county was named for him.

As a sheriff he was colorful but highly respected, often able to make an arrest just by sending word to someone to turn himself in. Odem was an outspoken opponent of the Ku Klux Klan, which was on the rise, and as the Klan gained political influence in the county, he resigned as sheriff.

His deputation as a Texas Ranger in 1919 at age sixty-two was undoubtedly for a short time span, as no record of his role with the Rangers appears in his Texas State Historical Association biography. Interestingly on his Rangers enlistment document (copy included), he shaves two years off his age, perhaps fearing the Rangers would consider him too old to serve.

The gun is accompanied by a Colt factory letter stating that it was shipped to Walter Tips, Austin, Texas in 1899. Serial number 191744, Colt single action army model, 4¾" barrel, with 10-20% of the original nickel finish present. The remainder is medium gray and unusually smooth and clean. Action crisp and tight. From the Estate of John R. Eckel, Sr. For more information on this estate, please view the article "An Antique Love Story".

Note: This firearm falls under the Federal Gun Control Act. Please see the information in the back of the catalog for Federal and State regulations for Buyers to make sure you can bid on this lot.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
