    Description

Cased Presentation Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver "From The Inventor" to City of Hartford steamer Captain Mills Serial no. 89683, .31 caliber, 5-inch octagonal barrel with 2-line New York address.
Contained in hardwood case with accessories including 2-cavity bullet mold marked "Colt" , Eagle flask, cap tin and box of cartridges. Backstrap inscribed: To Captain Mills/City of Hartford/From The Inventor. According to Grant in "Connecticut Disasters: True Stories of Tragedy And Survival" during "the rain caused flood of May 1, 1854...water rose over 30 feet in front of Colt's Armory...laborers who lived in shanties in the South Meadows had to be removed by boat...the steamer City of Hartford used lifeboats to rescue stranded families." This is the same year that this gun was manufactured. Condition: Fine as re-finished. Retaining approximately 90-95% of a re-blued finish. Good bore with scattered pitting. Case and accessories are very good to fine with age wear and patina. Flask with split seam. From the Michael Yeck Collection.

Note: Samuel Colt made special presentations of cased and inscribed revolvers as thank you gifts during this period. Often they were given to important government officials. Many of these have been documented and most of them are in private collections. There are two known thank you gifts given to steamboat Captains who worked on the Connecticut River. Both are inscribed "...from the inventor." This example is the first to be offered at auction. It is a very rare and important piece of Colt history.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
