    Description

    Extremely Rare Kidder Casing

Cased Double Presentation Engraved Colt 1851 Navy Revolver to Identified Union Cavalry Officer William Domer.
Serial no. 79298, .36 caliber, 7 1/2-inch barrel with address reading: --ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT--. Left side of frame is engraved: COLT'S/ PATENT and the cylinder is roll-stamped with Naval Engagement scene. Cylinder is also marked: COLTS PATENT 79298. This and all other serial numbers match including barrel, frame, trigger guard, cylinder and back strap. 9298 is marked on the wedge and loading lever. Case-hardened frame, loading lever and hammer. Blued barrel and cylinder. Plated trigger guard and back strap. Contained in velvet-lined Kidder case. Colt Navy revolvers in Kidder cases are very rare. Case with brass hardware and stamped PATENTED . APR 1854.

The gun has scroll and floral engraving typical of Gustave Young and his shop at Colt's. It is found on virtually all of the surfaces, including the screws and includes a wolf's head on the hammer. It is stunning in its execution. Special treatment was afforded the backstrap which is inscribed: TO WILLIAM DOMER FROM HIS FRIENDS / AT ALTOONA OCT 21ST 1861. Inscription is repeated as a scrimshaw treatment to left ivory grip panel. A double inscription is previously unknown and therefore extremely rare if not unique. It must reflect the honor and respect given to this American Cavalry officer. William Domer enlisted 11/30/1861 into the Pennsylvania Independent Cavalry, Anderson's Company and later was commissioned a Lieutenant. He mustered out 3/26/1863. He died in Pennsylvania in 1891.

Condition: Fine. Barrel retaining approximately 50-55% original finish with light handling wear. Breech and front of cylinder with some pitting. Tiny stress cracks observed at breech. Cylinder with smooth brown patina and good cylinder scene. Loading lever and frame retaining traces of case-colors, the balance a smooth gray patina. Trigger guard and back strap retaining approximately 85-90% of the original silver plating. Trigger guard, butt and backstrap with some fading. Grips fine. Action crisp. The case is very good with light handling wear and scattered dents. Light age wear to the interior. Accessories very good. A fine gun and rare combination of Young engraved, Kidder cased presentation to a Union officer.
