Buffalo Bill's Wild West: Smith & Wesson Revolver Belonging to the Show's Manager F. B. Hutchinson. Hutchinson's name is engraved on the left side of the gun, and it is accompanied by a copy of a 1988 letter from Greg Martin confirming it authenticity. It was sold by Butterfield & Butterfield on March 18,1988. The gun was one of a number of items obtained by the legendary Stella Foote from Buffalo Bill's sister, Judy Cody ( as confirmed by a 1987 letter to Greg Martin), Given the fact that his gun, once Hutchinson's, came through the Cody family suggests the possibility that at some point he gifted the gun, manufactured between 1902 and 1909, to the great show man himself - or at least directly to Julia. A fascinating Buffalo Bill association piece with impeccable provenance.Frederick Barley Hutchinson was the manager of Cody's show from 1902 to 1907, and supervised its extensive European Tours over four years. In 1908 he published Four Years in Europe with Buffalo Bill, which included individual details about how the show operated during this time period.
Smith & Wesson Double Action Revolver. Serial no. 100854, .32 caliber, 2 1/2-inch ribbed barrel with fixed front and rear sights. Blued finish. Case-hardened trigger. Left side of frame engraved: F.B. HUTCHINSON. Factory mother-of-pearl grip panels. Grip safety.
Condition: Good. Retaining approximately 20-30% finish, the balance a smooth grey patina with noticeable areas of handling wear and patches of pitting. Few minor scuffs and dings to grips. Action good. Lightly pitted bore.
