Ben Wheeler's Colt Single Action Revolver. .44 caliber, serial # 98216, 5 1/8" barrel. Colt factory letter confirms delivery to Simmons Hardware Co., St. Louis, Missouri on October 30, 1883. Engraved on butt strap: "Ben Wheeler / Caldwell Kansas." Very good condition with even, dark gray patina. Action crisp and tight. Replaced hard rubber grips.

This much-published and written-about Colt is accompanied by a thick dossier of supporting materials, some of which may be found reproduced on our website. Since acquiring this gun at Christie's in 1998 (selling price $12,650 against a catalog estimate of $4000-6000), Len Gratteri, the acknowledged expert on all things related to Ben Wheeler and the Medicine Lodge bank robbery, has accumulated a wealth of information. Few outlaw or lawmen guns (which shall we term this one?) come with such documentation or widespread acceptance in the collecting community. After twenty-five years of specialized research and collecting, Gratteri has chosen to offer this remarkable grouping at auction, providing a very special opportunity for the advanced collector.

An autographed copy of William Sherod Robinson Alias Ben Wheeler, a 276 page biography co-authored by Len Gratteri, Rod Cook, and James Williams in 2010, accompanies this lot.
