Exceptional WWII Group Identified to Staff Sergeant Robert M. Shipley Including Captured German Walther P-38 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Papers . Comprising: 1) German Walther P.38 Semi-Automatic Pistol, Holster and Capture Papers. Serial No. 8257c, 9mm caliber, 5-inch barrel. All visible numbers matching. Late war finish. Grooved black composition grips. Manufactured in 1944 by Walther (ac 44). Accompanied by a soft-shell pigskin holster maker marked: P38. There is an extra clip in the magazine compartment. The capture paper is dated August 29, 1945 and in addition to listing this pistol by serial number and type, it also lists two other pistols and a German compass S/Sgt. Shipley brought home but not included in this lot. 2) Staff Sergeant Shipley's Ike Jacket and Dress Hat. The Ike jacket is size 36R, made by Shapiro Clothing Co. in December, 1944. The uniform has a 103rd Division insignia on the right sleeve and a 45th Division insignia on the left sleeve. The collar insignia, rank insignia, service stripes, ruptured duck, and ribbon bars are all present. The hat is a military issue quality hat with brown chin strap and bill. 3) Miscellaneous wartime photographs of Shipley, an extra 45th Division and 103rd Division patch, sergeant's stripes, selective service card, and typed letter from Major General Robert T. Frederick welcoming Shipley to the 45th Division. 4) 103rd Infantry Division "The Trail of the Cactus" Unit History. Published by Turner Publishing Company, 1993. Laminated boards, 168 pages, profusely illustrated and containing a brief service biography of Shipley.Robert M. Shipley was drafted on June 4, 1941 and served with the 383rd Field Artillery Battalion of the 103rd Infantry Division. He transferred to the 45th Infantry Division after the war, returning to the United States on September 15, 1945.
Condition: 1) Very good. Original thin wartime finish with holster wear, light spotting and a few scratches. Crisp action. Bright bore. The holster is worn but exemplifies honest wartime use. 2) The uniform and hat have a few moth nips but are generally in very good condition. 3) All items in very good condition. 4) Very good condition.
