Nicholas M. Nolan (1835-1883) was a distinguished cavalry officer who rose through the ranks to become a major. His military career began in 1852 and ended in 1883. During the Civil War he found in sixteen major engagements, including the Peninsula Campaign, Maryland Campaign, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg campaign, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and the Appomattox Campaign. He was wounded at Culpeper, Virginia, and taken prisoner briefly at the Battle of Dinwiddie Court House. His post-Civil War career was no less exciting: he was the first company commander of A, Troop, 10th U.S. Cavalry, the "Buffalo Soldiers", an African-American cavalry troop, with which he was engaged in action in several notable campaigns including the "Staked Plains Horror" and the Victorio Campaign. It would seem likely that the revolver on offer would have been used by Nolan during the Indian War period.
Note: Gun has not been researched further than what was provided by consignor.

Condition: Very good. Finish a smooth gray overall with traces of case color on the frame. Light pitting to metal. Cylinder scene remains distinct. Grips panels with modest handling wear with a few scattered light dents along the base edge. Bore a bit dark but the rifling remains distinct. Strong action.
