Description

Scarce Early 19th Century American Flintlock Holster Pistol. 13" overall with 7 3/4" .56 caliber smoothbore brass octagonal barrel, with the left flat of the breech exhibiting two proof marks around the letters "IR" and "Baltimore" engraved about 2" forward of the breech. Lock engraved "Hodgson / & / Thompson". Brass trigger guard, which is superbly engraved with an American eagle on the underside, that is very similar to the eagle encountered on the butt caps of "Halbach" Baltimore pistols. Brass ramrod pipes and washers under the engraved lock screw heads, ramrod with brass cap. Stock appears to be of black walnut with bag shaped grip having flattened sides. With only a handful of these pistols known to exist, the gun should be placed in the hands of a competent restorer. Rather ineptly reconverted to flintlock, with the parts not worked or blended correctly, the front 3 3/4" of the forend is restored and there is an irregular 2" sliver missing under the forward portion of the lock. There is a small hairline from the left rear of the barrel to the rear lock screw and evidence of an old, rather minor repair to the trigger guard extension . Otherwise the gun shows just some normal wear and use and is overall very good. An important American pistol worthy of adept attention.
