Private Purchase British Flintlock Officer's Holster Pistol, Circa 1780. 7 3/4" iron barrel bearing two proof marks, the first 3 1/4" being octagonal and the front 4 1/2" round. Small silver front sight within a four pointed "spider" form German silver base. The engraved, roller frizzen, sliding safety lock and barrel are marked "I. BARBER" with the additional marking "NEWARK" on the barrel. Although the unengraved side plate, butt cap, and trigger guard are of German silver, the two patinated ramrod pipes are of real silver. The stock is walnut with extensive shell carving behind and around the barrel tang. Original horn tipped ramrod with iron worm. Original flintlock configuration. The stock shows minimal wear with the carving at the barrel tang of exceptional quality and very crisp. There are two minimal, really negligible cracks with no loss on the right fore stock and just forward of the lock, both barely perceptible. The barrel with dark patina and a few small areas of light to moderate pitting. The hammer spring is either broken or missing. Very pretty gun and a most unusual form with the combination of silver and German silver mounts.
