Full Curly Maple Stocked American, Likely Pennsylvania, Original Flintlock Pistol With Credible Provenance That It Was Owned By Notorious Revolutionary War Loyalist Simon Girty. 18" overall with 12" .60 caliber smoothbore barrel with decorative ring turnings at the center section. Groove cut at the barrel tang to serve as rear sight with very small , short brass blade front sight. Unmarked handmade lock, in what appears to be original flintlock configuration, with filed line decoration at the tail. All metal with smooth dark brown untouched patina with no rust or pitting, exceptionally nice. Full curly maple stock with rich untouched patina, fabricated without nose cap. There is a small, very old, repair to some minor splintering near the muzzle on the left side of the forestock, barely noticeable, else perfect. All brass furniture with two ramrod pipes, trigger guard with floral engraved decoration on bow and acorn finial, and stepped butt cap with 3" extensions. The butt cap exhibits floral rosette engraved decoration. The full brass side plate exhibits a unique pointed finial at the front lock bolt with pointed finial that could possibly aid in identifying the maker. Pin fastened barrel with two 7/8" long silver diamond shaped inlays on each side of the forestock, which are perfect with nice untouched patina. The gun is accompanied by paperwork establishing it was displayed in the Ohio Historical Center Bicentennial Exhibit as being the property of Girty. There is additional paperwork with information on the pistol's lineage from Girty's widow, over the years, to the father of the consignor.Girty was a controversial figure of the American Revolutionary War period who served as the liaison between the British and their Native American allies. Girty was born in Pennsylvania, but taken prisoners by the Senecas as a child, and by the time of the return to his family, seven years later, had come to prefer the Native American ways. Girty's conduct during the Revolution is the subject of considerable controversy and, while there is little question he participated in the torture and killing of American at the hands of Native Americans, and was involved in several ambushes and massacres of small groups of American troops, he is also credited on many occasions with saving the lives of American prisoners and ransoming them at his own expense. Girty fled to Canada at the end of the war from the Ohio/Indiana area and did not participate at all in the War of 1812, dying in Canada in 1818. A wonderful American pistol with a fascinating history.
