Fine Colt M1860 Fluted Cylinder Army #5343 Matching Inscribed to Captain Price C. Newman, Co. C, 9th Kentucky Infantry CSA. A wonderful gun with a great history. The gun is completely untouched and consigned by direct lineal descendants. The gun overall retains traces of the original blue and case colors as well as traces of silver on the trigger guard. The gun is very sharp and crisp with tight crisp action and fine bore. The balance of the metal generally smooth and gray with some scattered areas of very light dry surface rust that would easily hand clean if so desired. Grips retains most of the original varnish with just some wear along the bottom edges. All markings crisp and deep. The gun is inscribed on the inner brass grip strap in block letters "Capt. P. C. Newman C. S. A. " Absolutely authentic and of the period with the strap showing very nice untouched patina. The Colt factory letter which accompanies the gun identifies it as having been shipped July 9, 1861 to W. J. Syms and Bro. New York, New York. Likely captured by Price shortly after his promotion to Captain on June 14, 1862 and appropriately inscribed. The gun is accompanied by the original quintessentially Confederate brown leather loop and tab closed end holster also in excellent condition. Loop the full width of the holster and large long tab. Belt loop on the reverse affixed by brass rivets. The tab/flap of the holster shows considerable finish crackling but no flaking, with the balance of the holster being about perfect. Very supple and fits every contour of the gun like a glove, and obviously the holster that always accompanied it. The 9th Kentucky was heavily engaged throughout the war in the deep south, suffering heavy casualties at Jonesboro, Ga. and Stone's River. A wonderful Confederate set, of unquestioned authenticity, and never before offered for sale.
