    Inscribed O.P.E. New Market May 15th 1864.

    Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver.
Serial no. 4667 [all matching, 5202 on cylinder], 36 caliber, 7 1/2-inch barrel. Originally blued finish with casehardened frame. Top of barrel reads -ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-. Various inspector marks. One-piece walnut grip. Silver oval inlay on left side of grip inscribed O.P.E. / NEW MARKET / MAY 15TH 1864. The Battle of New Market was fought on May 15, 1864 in Virginia during the American Civil War. A temporary Confederate army of approximately 4100 men, which contained cadets from VMI, forced Union General Franz Sigel and his army out of the Shenandoah Valley. Virginia Military Institute cadets were integral to the Confederate victory at New Market. Some searches online came up with the name Oliver Perry Evans [O.P.E.], a VMI cadet and the color-bearer. One wonders if the gun was a cherished keepsake by this VMI cadet of his involvement in this conflict, probably having the plaque engraved shortly after the war. This would be a good candidate for further research, the gun or inscription have not been authenticated or traced back to this particular person. This is just our opinion based on the gun and well done inscription. The serial number of this gun is also visible inside the wood grip. Note: According to Flayderman's Guide, these 1861 Navy revolvers were in production from 1861 through c. 1873 with total production of about 38,843 made. Serial numbers approached 28,000 range by December 1865, the year the Civil War ended. See Flayderman's 5B-101. This gun was manufactured in 1862.

Condition: Fair to good. Gun has a smooth grey patina overall. Scattered pitting throughout. Possibly partial cleaning at some point to metal. Grips with moderate wear, dings and mars. Grips marked 4667 on wood [inside]. Marred and replaced screws. Inscription appears well made. Action good. Bore a bit dark, rifling visible.
