British East India Co. Military Style Original Flintlock Pistol. Brass mounted pistol with a 9" .75 caliber, smoothbore, round iron barrel bearing the mark "THOMSON 1809" and two proof marks. The gun being 15" overall. The flat iron lock also marked "THOMSON" forward of the hammer along with the date 1809 plus a sectioned heart under the number 4 with the letters V, E, I, and C within the heart, behind the hammer. Brass S shaped side plate, trigger guard, ramrod pipe and butt cap are plain, the stock is dark walnut. Reinforced cock with the hammer screw likely a replacement. Dark overall patina with some minor scattered salt and peppering. The ramrod is clearly old but possibly a replacement. Wood with deep rich patina showing honest use with a minor old 2" crack at the rear lock screw and a second small crack on the right side of the forestock. Neither crack exhibits any loss and easily repaired. Very nice example of this important British form.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
