1760 Original Flintlock British Sea Service Pistol. 12", .58 caliber smoothbore round barrel bearing two proof marks at the rear. The gun is 19" overall. Flat lock marked "Galton/1760" vertically behind the hammer with an engraved crown with "GR" forward of the hammer, with an engraved broad arrow pointing to the left side of the crown and a flat reinforced cock. All mounts are brass with the exception of the belt hook which is iron. Ramrod is quite old but probably a replacement. Walnut stock. The barrel shows some staining, with patina and some small areas of light to moderate pitting. There is some very light pitting on the lock and hammer, with the top jaw and screw as well as the barrel tang screw probably being correct replacements. The forestock to just forward of the front lock screw is replaced with a diagonal splice. Obviously very old and has acquired a nice patina, beautifully done, there is also a 1 1/2" piece of wood replaced behind the lock, also nicely done. Scarce gun with, despite the restoration, a very pleasing appearance.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
