John Nelson: A Pistol Owned and Carried by the Driver of the Famous Deadwood Stagecoach in Buffalo Bill's Wild West. A .44 caliber percussion pistol of probable Belgian manufacture with octagonal, rifled barrels, 1871 dated. Nelson's name has been etched on the top of the rib in large letters. A charming brass beaver inlaid into one wood grip shows excellent wear patina. Overall condition is excellent, length 9.75". Accompanied by a well-used beaded holster that appears original to the gun. The beadwork on the holster has been verified as 1860 Cheyenne by a leading expert.

Nelson was born in 1826 in West Virginia, but left home to go west with a group of traders at the age of twelve. When the group encountered a large band of Sioux on the Platte, young Nelson became so fascinated with these people that he refused to leave with the traders and was adopted by the Indians. He went on to enjoy a career as a scout and interpreter for traders, and later in the 1870s became a shotgun guard on Wells Fargo's Deadwood Stage. Nelson joined Buffalo Bill's cast in its early days and for some twenty years drove the stagecoach in one of the show's best-loved acts. With his grizzled beard, wide-brimmed hat and colorful western garb, he must have seemed the very personification of the Old West to audiences in the East.
