Jesse James: A Remington .44 Caliber New Model Army Revolver Believed to Have Been Once Owned by the Notorious Outlaw. According to the accompanying 1969 affidavit, this revolver was found under the home in which James was living, under an assumed name, when he was assassinated. It was purchased sometime prior to 1952 from a member of the St. Josephs, Missouri police department, who presumably retained it when it was discovered. Another gun uncovered at the same time was displayed at the Pattie House Museum. According to his letters, which accompany the lot, the barrel was cracked and Harold Akins had it refinished in 1952. In 1969 he sold the gun to Western collector Rick Mack, who sold it to Robert Palazzo in 1985. Apparently the museum's gun was stolen, and Palazzo expressed some concern that the gun he was being offered might be that one. However, Mack confirmed with the 1969 seller, Harold Akins, that his gun was indeed the example sold by Akins, and the transaction was completed.

Is the provenance air tight? Certainly not. Like many guns attributed to famous western figures it requires somewhat of a leap of faith. However, the story about its being secreted under the James house has a ring of credibility, and who but the incognito outlaw himself was likely to have placed it there. A thoroughly Provenanced Jesse James gun would command a price well into the six figures. We offer this one at a comparatively modest opening bid, and will rely on our bidders to make their own evaluations.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
