DescriptionFactory Engraved Tipping & Lawden Model 2 Pepperbox.
Serial no. 369, 3-inch 4-barrel cluster, .30 RF caliber. Blued finish with silver-plated frame [under brass]. British proofs on both sides of barrel cluster. Marked TIPPING & LAWDEN / SHARPS' PATENT on left side of frame. Checkered ebony grips. This particular pepperbox is profusely engraved in a scroll-pattern which could easily have been done or marketed as an exhibition piece. Note: According to Flayderman's, Tipping & Lawden of Birmingham, England was one of only two foreign manufacturers licensed by Sharps to make copies of their four-barrel pepperboxes. Manufactured early 1860's.
Condition: Fine. Retaining approximately 75% bluing to barrel clusters with balance turning a dark gray patina with some pitting, concentrating near the muzzle area. Thin silver-plating remains to the frame with brass exposure overall. Grips excellent. Action good. Bore good.
