DescriptionClassic "Prostitutes" Ensemble, Belonging to "Frenchie N.O." ** Gun Control Act Requirements Apply**
The "N.O." presumably stands for New Orleans, and this box and its contents would look right at home in one of that city's turn-of- the-century brothels. The engraved silver name plate on the top of the lid is appropriately patinated and seems original to the rosewood box. The 15.5" x 9.25" x 4.25" box is nicely inlaid with mother of pearl decoration, some of which is missing.
Inside is a delightfully feminine, beautifully engraved, diminutive pistol dated to the turn of the century. The 4 7/8" gun is stamped "RB" with crown and star on one side and "ALC" on the other with serial number 2987, and is presumably of English or European manufacture. It is in beautiful condition and almost certainly has never been fired. The case is clearly fitted to the pistol and the wear pattern on the plush liner suggests the gun was nestled there for many years. The other contents include a gorgeous art nouveau-style push dagger with original fancy silver-finish scabbard, a silver mesh purse, delicate folding parasol, matched set of six lady's tools including button hook, nail file, tweezers, etc., and miniature scissors with brass thimble and cloth tape measure. The condition of these items is consistent, and they "feel" right together. As with similar "gambler's kits", we tend to maintain a healthy skepticism about this sort of item. However, our instinct is that this one is original and correct.
Note: This firearm falls under the Federal Gun Control Act. Please see the information in the back of the catalog for Federal and State regulations for Buyers to make sure you can bid on this lot.
