    Description

Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver Attributed to Texas Lawman A.Y. Allee. Serial no. 82483, .44-40 caliber, 7 1/2-inch barrel with single-line address and etched panel. Nickel-plated finish with two piece hard rubber grips (carved inside: A.Y.A.) Backstrap inscribed: A.Y. ALLEE. Sold with Colt factory letter confirming configuration (stocks not listed). Gun was included in a shipment of 50 guns to Hartley & Graham, New York Sept. 14, 1882. Note: Alfred Y. Allee was born in DeWitt County, Texas in 1855 and died in Laredo, Texas in 1896. He was a prominent American lawman in Texas in the late 19th century. In 1882, Allee became Deputy sheriff of Karnes County (San Antonio area). That same year, according to reports, he shot and killed a robbery suspect under questionable circumstances, which people claimed he was settling an old score. He was charged with the crime, but not convicted of murder. Allee was stabbed to death in 1896 in a barroom brawl in Laredo (Webb County). According to records, Allee had a reputation for quick and casual violence and for shooting prisoners after surrendering. Allee's grandson, named Alfred Young Allee, was a Texas Ranger for 37 years. The association with Allee is based on consignor notes (Colt letter, article on Allee) and inscriptions on gun. Condition: Good. Appears to be partially refinished. Retaining approximately 25-35% nickel finish with remainder a smooth steel gray patina. Etched panel barely visible. Grips are poor and more than likely replacements of original issued ones. Action good. Bore good with some pitting.
