World's Columbian Exposition: Polyopticon Camera and Lantern Slides. A real rarity and treat to go with the tickets and shows of fair material is an original Polyopticon Camera, actually a slide projector of the vintage used for such presentations as made at the time of the fair and for which tickets are offered in our post-fair lot. Not only is this "overhead projector" from the period, but it is still in the original box (measuring 6" x 7" x 9.5"). The box lid is separated at several of the edge areas, but the box top is in excellent condition with the image of the projector and the text about it. The bottom of the box shows the original mailing address to a resident in New York.

We have included a group of highly collectible photographs of the fairgrounds and many of the attractions. These are the original Lantern Slides used to present histories, talks, and other presentations about the WCE, such as those advertised here, especially popular immediately after the fair closed. Speakers would hit the lecture circuit with narration and slide shows about the highlights of the fair.

The group of original WCE magic or glass lantern slides were not originally sold with this projector. Most were sold by companies employing photographers at the fair and other sights. They were sold much like prepackaged 35mm slides at fairs in the twentieth century. The slides include the following: Cliff Dwellers, a recreation of early Southwestern cliff dwelling Native people, the Agriculture Building with lagoon, boats in the foreground, the Court of Honor and the Administration Building, the Administration Building from the Liberal Arts Building, the Closeup of the Administration Building, the Peristyle, the Wooded Island and the Horticulture Building, and Machinery Hall.

The eight slides measure 3.25" x 4" and each is in virtually mint condition, with the full images present; only one shows any significant image fading. They can be used as positives from which to print high quality images today. From the collection of Norm Bolotin.
