World's Columbian Exposition: Large Pennsylvania Railroad Company Engraved Invitation for Eugene Field. Measures 7" x 7". The pass was addressed specifically to Eugene Field, even then a well-known and renowned author-poet. At this time, Field was a staff writer for The News, Chicago. This event was a special running of the actual John Bull locomotive and train of cars from New York to Chicago over the Pennsylvania Railroad, April 17th to 22nd, 1893, and proceeded to the fair itself, where it was put on display for the six-month duration of the fair. Folded over and on the reverse of the very heavy invitation is the schedule of the John Bull train. Once mounted but does not effect display, portions that are printed. An incredibly rare and obviously unique paper item made out to Field, and a rare item inviting someone to ride on the John Bull (outside of the tickets for the actual grounds). Limited, of course, to dignitaries for this trip. Exceptional. From the Field estate. From the collection of Norm Bolotin.
