DescriptionWorld's Columbian Exposition: Group of Restaurant Tickets and Chits including The Wellington Company. The Wellington Company was the largest concession with restaurants throughout the grounds. Included in this lot are Wellington 5, 10, 25 and 50 cent plus one dollar tickets for Stands 63, 64, 65, 66 and 67. The stand designation does not align with concessions but essentially is used the same way, matching concessions rather than actual stands or shops. While difficult to see here (and even 6 inches from your eyes) the Stand designations can be found on borders and inside designs of tickets. In this case, the numbers are at the top left of each ticket and shown only as "S" and the number. Also included is a Wellington restaurant check in which the customer would pay from the amount punched by the waiter on the check, running from a nickel to $1.75.
The 25 cent Garden Café chit is from one of the restaurants and came in an estate of only Columbian tickets, but we have been unable to identify which restaurant it is. Very likely it was along The Midway and outdoors or a rooftop restaurant at the Natatorium or possibly the German or Austrian villages.
Likewise, the Boss Roaster of Lowery & Sievers was likely on the Midway, but there were, of course, dozens of restaurants at virtually ever location at the fair.
Also here are two tickets for Welling unlike the normal S-tickets, a 10 cent (we assume credit or coupon) and a "Pay Cashier" noting only "40" which may be a location and not an amount.
Note that the Wellington tickets have overprints, some with just a date over the face (all October) and some with a black number over the red serial number. These we assume were to be utilized in the last few days of the fair when the company ran out of new numbered tickets and had to reuse old tickets with an overprint to distinguish them from the original. A great lot of restaurant tickets from the greatest world's fair. From the collection of Norm Bolotin.
