Description

World's Columbian Exposition: Collection of Tickets for the Steamers Running Between Downtown Docks and the World's Fair Pier. This was a major means of conveyance, by the oft-pictured Whaleback Steamer Columbus, as well as other traditional vessels, including sidewheelers. This lot includes: one double ticket, joined in mint condition, brown with black ink and red numbers. Numbers are 058651 and 058650, one good only for day issued, Chicago to World's Fair Grounds and the other from the grounds to the City. Stub, blue, that is numbered at the bottom in a progressive #3570 for steamers Cyclone, Ivanhoe and Imperial, weather permitting. Also, a blue-gray standard ticket "A" noting that it was "Between" Chicago and the grounds, obviously making it much more usable since it didn't specify which direction tickets were to be used; more universal but actually seen dramatically less often than brown one-direct tickets. Thirdly, a same size ticket, this one white with black ink, noting "The World's Fair Steamship Co." and the ticket is good between "Chicago and World's Fair Grounds." This one is the most often seen, yet we would still categorize it as very scarce. This one mint but for a bit of rubbing on the bottom margin at the perforation. Number 367003 printed in red. Fourth, a small blue stub for steamers from the city. Total of 5 tickets, one being a double. From the collection of Norm Bolotin.
