Unusual 1909 Lincoln and Washington Carved Chairs Made of oak, with busts of Lincoln and Washington carved into the backs, these chairs were probably made for the Lincoln Centennial Celebration that took place nationally in 1909. Typical of the new arts and craft decor of the period, the chairs have little embellishment other then the machine carved images on the backs. The plank type seat and turned front legs show the transition in style from the Victorian period to the arts and craft look of the legs on the back. A separation of the two pieces of wood making up the seat has occurred in both as is common other wise these chairs are mint. The true luster of the wood shows through with a wonderful patina. Many items were made for the Lincoln Centennial but we have never had the opportunity to sell a pair of these chairs.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
