Description
Lusitania Survivor Gold Tiffany Pocket Watch. On the surface, this appears to be a fine gold pocket watch made by Tiffany & Company. There is, however, an engraved inscription on the inside cover that reads: "To George A. Kessler, in joyful thankfulness for his marvelous escape from death in the 'Lusitania' disaster, May 7th 1915, From His Loving Wife Cora." The Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat as it was suspected (correctly, it seems) of carrying U.S. munitions for use by British armed forces, despite German warnings in American newspapers. Eventually, such actions prompted a U.S. declaration of war against the Central Powers. The back cover has the recipient's monogram, GAK. The case has a 1913 gold stamped hallmark and the back of the dial is stamped 14K gold. It is a 17 ligne, 19 jewel Touchon & Co. Geneva movement with Swiss lever escapement. All serial numbers match. Touchon & Co. was in business from 1907 to 1921 at which time they were acquired by Wittnauer. During this time, Touchon's primary customer was Tiffany & Co. The watch has a broken mainspring and currently is not operable. George Kessler was a philanthropist, millionaire wine and champagne merchant, and he established a fund to aid blind veterans of World War One.Auction Info
