Centennial Exhibition Lithograph. "Memorial Vignette of the International Exhibition Authorized by the United States Centennial Commission 1876", 19.75" x 7", engraved by the National Bank Note Company, New York. This commemorative illustration oozes symbolism at every turn to the point of confusion. A seated Columbia is surrounded by a cast of characters including a trapper, a Persian, Muses, putti, the infant Bacchus, an Incan, sailors, a squaw, a farmer and a Chinaman. What was the viewer to conclude? In any case, a splendidly executed production matted in a gilt period frame, 27.75" x 18". The frame shows minor chips, however the print remains in excellent condition.
