Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-3) Flown "Post Insertion" Checklist Book Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Jack Lousma, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. A twenty-eight page checklist book printed on 10" x 8.5" tabbed cardstock, three-hole punched, and held together with three binder rings. There are three tabbed sections: "Post Insertion", "1 (2) GPCs Failed", and "ATO Post Inserstion". We note numerous handwritten annotations and calculations throughout the checklist. On the front cover is the STS-3 mission insignia with a red line at the right edge. It is signed at the left side: "This 'Post Insertion'/ checklist' was flown/ on STS-3 and/ used by both/ crewmembers/ during the/ mission./ Jack Lousma/ CDR STS-3/ March 22-30, 1982/ ". Very fine with light wear from use.

Included with this lot is a detailed signed Letter of Authenticity on his letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify the STS-3 (Columbia) Post Insertion checklist that accompanies this letter was flown in space and used by the crew aboard the STS-3 mission during March 22-30, 1982. The Post Insertion checklist was used soon after entering orbit and for the first four hours of the mission, after which the Crew Activity Plan (aka Flight Plan) became the prime reference for on-orbit activities. Among other numerous crew functions, the Post Insertion checklist contains procedures for: (1) Transitioning the General Purpose Computers (GPCs) and Digital Autopilot (DAP) from the Launch phase to the On-Orbit phase of flight; (2) Switching spacecraft thermal control from the water evaporators to the radiator panels; (3) Opening the Payload Bay Doors (PBLDs); and (4) Maneuvering to the Passive Thermal Control (PTC) mode, which resembles a slow, fuel-conserving, "barbeque" roll with respect to the Sun. Unique to STS-3, and noted in the checklist, the PLBDs received special testing. Normally, the PLBDs were opened and closed by an automatic sequence, but on STS-3 each function was tested individually. The forward, aft, and centerline latches, as well as the doors, were opened and closed manually. Their positions were measured precisely with a theodolite, as shown in the checklist procedures, to verify each of these functions conformed to the engineering design. Finally, this checklist also contains alternate Post Insertion action plans for two contingency situations: (1) Failure of one or two GPCs, and (2) A launch failure resulting in an "Abort to Orbit", which enables entering a safe orbit but one that would be lower than planned. This Post Insertion checklist is from my personal collection and has been in my possession since the mission was flown in 1982."
