Description

Wally Schirra's 1966 Philippine Legion of Honor (Commander) Medal in Presentation Case with Plaque Originally from His Personal Collection, with LOA. An impressive 2.125" x 2.5 enameled bronze medal with neck sash, ribbon, and lapel pin in the original wooden presentation case, awarded "For Meritorious Service." It was awarded to Gemini 6A Command Pilot Schirra in March 1966, by President Ferdinand and First Lady Imelda Marcos during a ceremony at the Malacanang Palace (photo included with lot). He and Gemini 7 Command Pilot Frank Borman, who also received this honor, were on an eight nation goodwill tour of the Far East. Our research shows that Schirra and Borman were the only American astronauts to ever receive this Legion of Honor medal in any rank. Also included is a wooden plaque of 11" x 13" bearing the original award letter as signed by the Philippine Secretary of Defense. The full text of the letter is transcribed on our website. Would make a great display. Very fine.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity from Jo Schirra stating, in full: "The Philippines Legion of Honor Medal issued to Walter M. Schirra on March 4th, 1966 accompanying this letter comes from the personal collection / archives of Astronaut Wally Schirra. Prior to being offered for sale through Farthest Reaches Inc., it has remained continuously in the Schirra family's possession."

AWARD OF THE PHILIPPINE LEGION OF HONOR

    (Commander)

By direction of the President, pursuant to paragraph 2e, Section I, Armed Forces of the Philippines   Regulations G 131-051, this Headquarters, dated 21 January 1954, the PHILIPPINE LEGION OF HONOR in the degree of COMMANDER is hereby awarded to

CAPTAIN WALTER M SCHIRRA, JR, USN

for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service to humanity as astronaut of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States of America. As Command Pilot of Gemini 6 spacecraft, which rendezvoused in space with Gemini 7, Astronaut Schirra with his special technical competence, not only helped advance the space program of the United States but also led humankind toward the pursuit of space exploration for peaceful application. Providing efficacy to the astronaut training program of the United States, subject astronaut likewise made available through his perilous orbiting into space hitherto unknown and unavailable research data in ionospheric physics, atmospheric, aeronomical, meteorological and astronomical fields. He also contributed immensely in data acquisition along cardiovascular conditioning, inflight exerciser, phonocardiography, otolith test, celestial radiometry, space stadimetry, photometry and other highly technical endeavors. By these outstanding achievements worthy of recognition the world over and which are deserving objects of appreciation by the Filipino people, Astronaut Schirra has beyond an iota of doubt contributed immeasurably to greater heights in scientific developments.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
